Brief curriculum Vitae
David served articles with attorneys Adams & Adams while completing his LLB degree. After being admitted as an advocate in 1988, he served as public prosecutor before being appointed Secretary of the Advisory Committee on Non-Racial Area Measures. In 1993 David joined the Southern Africa Music Rights Organisation(SAMRO), heading up the Organisation’s legal and broadcasting department before joining the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) as legal manager, and from 2004 onward as Chief Operating Officer. In this capacity David was instrumental in the creation of the South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA), as a fully functioning collecting society in 2007. David served as CEO of SAMPRA until the end of 2016.
David holds the LLM degree (with distinction) from the University of the Witwatersrand in Media, Telecommunication, Broadcast and Cyber Law. His dissertation was on the collective administration of copyright works in South Africa.
