Portia is a practicing advocate and a member of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates since 2003. She has a general commercial law practice and specialises in labour law. She has 17 years’ experience in the field of labour law as she commenced her career as a full time commissioner for the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration [“CCMA”]. Currently she is a senior part-time commissioner for the CCMA and Public Sector Bargaining Councils. Portia is also an International Labour Organisation [“ILO”] accredited trainer to train labour law and dispute resolution skills. She has since trained CCMA commissioners, labour relations officers/managers in both public and private sector.

Portia is an acting judge of the Labour Court and has appeared at the Constitutional Court on several occasions as a junior counsel led by senior counsel and alone as well.

Her legal areas of interest are Labour Law & Alternative Dispute Resolution; Constitutional Law; Insolvency Law; Company Law & Corporate Governance Best Practice; and Electronic Communication, Broadcasting & information Technology law.
